About
No, I never went to art school, but that hasn’t stopped me from being an artist. In fact, I don’t remember a time when I wasn’t creating - some of my earliest memories are of drawing dogs and other animals from textbooks. I was always studying where they lived, what they ate, what their behaviors and characteristics were. That study continued into college, where I ended up with a Zoology major, a Studio Art minor, and the intent to become a physical therapist (listen, I think we can all agree that if we went back to college we’d do things differently). In fact, it wasn’t until my first figure drawing class that I discovered the joy of combining anatomy and art. Being able to convey the feeling of movement on paper through gesture drawings, line weight, light and shadow… it felt like dancing. It still does.
It wasn’t until after college that I began to invest more and more time into art, and Covid gave me just that. I sold my first piece in 2020, and since then my work has taken on all sorts of forms - pet portraits, murals, wedding photos, figurative work, shirt designs, and more. The past year or two I’ve begun to find what it is that feels like me - to create with a voice and an eye of my own. The natural world continues to be a part of my work, with the human-animal dynamic playing a main role. Themes of memory and psychology have had an abstract influence to an otherwise realistic style, and playing with titles has added a layer of complexity in a “chicken or the egg” sort of way. All that to say, my creative process continues to unfold.
